A couple of celebrity costumes were submitted as well:

But this has to be my absolute favorite costume:

That’s right, he’s a centaur, complete with a full horse body! Now that is fun and creative. I imagine this costume is a bit awkward to get around in, but you have got to admire the dedication and the overall quality of the costume.

Summer Camp

Summer Camp is a great time to experience the freedom of going shirtless. For one, simply because summer camps consists of mainly outdoor activities in the hottest time of the year, so shedding the shirt is simply more comfortable. But it is also part of the experience. It embodies the care-free nature of the camp experience, as well as the freedom and self-confidence we want young men to develop. It promotes a sense of comfort and confidence with one’s own body, and a sense of camaraderie with their fellow campers as a shared bonding experience.

It has been a part of the camp experience for generations.

Whether engaging in sports, outdoor activities, or wilderness camping, shirts are not necessary for summer camp.

Staff and camp counselors should not be required to wear shirts, either. Joining the campers in going shirtless promotes bonding and makes the staff more relatable.

Of course, this is only one tiny aspect of what summer camp is about. A well-designed summer camp program should teach some skills, promote health and fitness, and build character. But incorporating a healthy body image and positive bonding experiences with friends and role models can be one aspect of that experience. So, whether you are a camper, counselor, or in administration, I want to encourage you to get out there and make the most of summer camp!

Hot Yoga

As this wrestling team learned, hot yoga is not just a good excuse to peel off your shirt, but a great way to become more attuned to your body, to condition it and push yourself to new extremes. And after all, this is what it is all about. Developing confidence and getting to know your body. And there is perhaps no better way to accomplish this than through the challenging poses of yoga.

This is no easy-going, relaxed activity. As Moody said, “Yoga is not a joke. Yoga is tough.” “It’s more intense than I thought it would be,” Colin adds. And the conditioning aspects have great carry-over value for sports like wrestling. “You use a lot of core strength,” adds Micah. “I’m down with anything that makes you more flexible,” points out James.

So, if you can find a class near you, I would definitely suggest giving hot yoga a try. You will develop strength and flexibility, inner toughness, as well as self-respect and an increased awareness of your own body.

The Naked Gunner

PBY Blister Gunner, Rescue at Rabaul, 1944

Nudity is typically a bit off-topic for this blog, so I apologize if the naked butt offends anyone, but I promise it is not superfluous. You see, there is a story behind it and I hope that with this piece of history we can honor a hero and — hopefully — learn something about ourselves and our culture at the same time.

I had seen this picture being shared a few times and wondered, “What the heck? Why is this guy naked? Is this for real, or is this photograph staged?” It turns out this an authentic World War II photograph, taken by Horace Bristol in 1944. Bristol was part of the U.S. Naval Photographic Unit under Captain Edward J. Streichen, commissioned to document the war. But why was this man naked? Well, this man was a crew member aboard a seaplane called in to rescue a downed marine at Rabaul harbor. The marine was in the water and had been badly burned and temporarily blinded, so to get him on board this brave soul stripped off all of his clothes and swam out to pull him from the water. They were under fire from the Japanese the entire time, so as soon as the marine and his rescuer were safely aboard, they took off without taking time to get dressed and the rescuer returned to his station at the machine gun to defend his crew. And now you see why I called him a hero.

So, apart from honoring a heroic veteran on Veteran’s Day (for my U.S. readers), why is this germane to this blog? This blog is clearly not about nudity. But I think this story can teach us something about attitudes about the body in general. While he may have pushed aside some reservations about nudity to accomplish his heroic act, I think people from this era also had a somewhat more relaxed attitude toward the human body. When it was necessary to save a life, he stripped off his clothing (which could have hindered his rescue, causing both him and the marine to drown) without a second thought. And his priority upon returning to the plane was returning fire to cover his crew rather than covering his body. I imagine that many men today — more inhibited about their bodies — would find it difficult to put aside their bashfulness, even in the face of life-threatening circumstances. There is nothing wrong with having or conforming to certain societal norms about clothing, etc, but when these inhibitions are so deep-seated we (subconsciously) prioritize them above life and safety, that is a problem and also indicates an unhealthy self-image. This blog attempts to promote a healthy body image and a sense of freedom and security, things we could learn a lot about from previous generations.

I hope that you have enjoyed our history lesson today. Allow me to sign off with a salute to all of our brave men and women in uniform who have fought for freedom. Thank you!

Shirtless Silver Surfer costume rocks NYC for Halloween 2016!

Apparently, this body painted Silver Surfer hit New York City this Halloween and drew some serious attention. Of course, we felt we needed to follow up and share this epic shirtless costume here as well.

Additionally, we found a behind the scenes on how the body paint was done, which was pretty awesome:

Enjoying the Outdoors

It’s that time of year again. As the weather warms up, it’s a perfect time to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors! Hiking and camping are fun activities, great exercise for the body, stimulation for the mind, and food for the soul. You can engage your body in running and climbing, engage your mind in studying the plants and wild life, and then take time to just drink in the beauty of nature.

Going shirtless is a great way to enhance the experience. Not just because it more comfortable — although it is, especially in hot weather — but because it helps you feel more at one with nature. It is like returning to a more primitive state. For many, it is symbolic of casting off the stresses and constraints of modern life, if just for a while, to experience true recreation.

Of course, the outdoors is also a great place to begin experiencing greater freedom with going shirtless and greater acceptance of your own body, because it is socially acceptable, often even expected. But it can also be a particularly enriching experience. And it can be a great bonding experience among friends, as well.

So I want to encourage you this summer to go seek out the wild spaces, peel off your shirt, soak in the majesty, push away cares and worries, and experience a unique oneness with nature. You won’t regret it.

Gym Owners: Why you should not require shirts in your facility

Gym Owners:

Why you should not require shirts in your facility

1. Comfort

Going shirtless really is one of the most comfortable ways to workout. It maximizes cooling and evaporation of sweat. A sweaty shirt can get really uncomfortable. Special wicking fabrics can help with this, but they tend to be more expensive and are still not nearly as good as simply going shirtless. They still retain some heat and the sweat can’t evaporate as quickly as it does from the skin. The next best thing are probably cut-off shirts with no sides, the less fabric the better. These are cheaper than expensive moisture-wicking fabrics and probably allow even better air circulation and cooling, but they retain sweat longer once they get wet and that can still get uncomfortable. Besides, we have all seen that guy in the cut-off shirt and thought, “Well, he might as well just not wear a shirt!” So seriously, why not just let him go without a shirt?

2. Motivation

A lot of people find going shirtless to be motivating. For those who have aesthetic goals, it draws their attention to their body and how they want it to look, driving them to work for those goals. For others, they feel it is expected that if they take their shirt off, they must be exerting maximal effort. They would feel embarrassed to give less once the shirt has come off, so it drives them to reach for maximum performance. Still others simply find it makes them feel more virile and powerful, giving them a mental edge in their workouts. Some feel that even the presence of someone who is working out shirtless is a motivator, even if they lack the confidence to shed their own. It creates an environment of exertion and performance. While this may be intimidating to some, this can usually be overcome with proper coaching and encouragement and the benefits likely far outweigh the drawbacks.

3. Shirts are not a good way to keep the gym sanitary

Hygiene is often cited as a reason not to allow men to workout shirtless in the gym. But wearing a shirt is not a good way to keep the gym sanitary and if you take the proper steps (which you should be doing anyway) it will be pointless. Most germs are spread by your hands, not your torso. You use your hands to touch all of the nasty things around you all day. And your hands frequently come in contact with mucous membranes like eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. And you are going to touch all of the equipment with your hands anyway, which is worse than a bare torso.
So what should you do? All equipment should be wiped down after each use! Supply your patrons with sanitary wipes, or spray bottles of a sanitizing cleaner. Alcohol, lysol, or whatever, just use something that kills bacteria! And having a few bottles of hand sanitizer is a good idea, as well. If you do this, then requiring shirts or not will be completely irrelevant to hygiene.

4. Nobody is really offended by it

Another objection sometimes cited is, “This is a family gym.” So? Why would taking off your shirt be incompatible with a family-friendly facility? Families frequently go to pools and beaches, where men typically go shirtless. The truth is, it offends a lot less people than you think and that one person who complains is more likely jealous than genuinely offended. Build a friendly and encouraging atmosphere, and you won’t really have to worry about people being offended by the guys who take off their shirts. If you want to run a more family-friendly facility, prohibit cursing and use positive imagery and slogans, promote dedication, hard work, and discipline. Families will appreciate these things and the shirtlessness will not be an issue as long as you have set the right attitude and environment.

5. Requiring shirts can look hypocritical

If you use shirtless pictures in the gym for motivational posters or exercise diagrams, etc, and especially if you use them in advertising, requiring shirts to be worn in your actual gym looks hypocritical. And almost every gym does one or more of these things! This can send several wrong messages. You degrade and objectify the human body by presenting it as acceptable to use for profit, but somehow needing to be covered when working out for your personal benefit. And if you plaster the walls and billboards with pictures of models, but want to keep all of the real bodies (well, torsos, anyway) of real people under wraps, then you are promoting an unhealthy and unrealistic view of the body. While motivation and working for goals are important, it needs to be balanced with a healthy dose of acceptance and reality. Allowing gym-goers to exercise shirtless is one way to help with this.

6. It can be a popular approach and may attract business

Just look at the popularity of Crossfit, which generally allows participants to go shirtless. Other popular athletic activities that generally don’t require shirts include rock climbing, bouldering, and mixed martial arts (think UFC). Obviously, many guys enjoy shirtless athletic activities, so this may actually open up a new niche market for your fitness business. This is probably not something you want to present as a selling point for your facility, but there are subtle ways to advertise this perk. If you have any posted signage, simply remove them or remove the shirt requirement from them. Word of mouth is pretty effective. Also simply use a picture or two on your site and on your social media page that includes shirtless exercisers. Finally, consider adding your facility to the Shirtless Friendly Directory, where you might reach people who are specifically looking for a gym that accommodates their workout preferences.

There is also PDF version of this article you can print and share with local gyms. I hope you will spread the word, and add any gyms who adopt the new policy to the Shirtless Friendly Directory.
