Hit the Gym

Some how, working out shirtless just seems to inspire guys to work harder. I really don't even think it is necessarily the thought of other guys (and possibly women) watching you lift, although that probably helps. When I pull off my shirt to lift, I feel more attuned to my body, I'm more aware of each muscle and it helps me to push harder, lift heavier, and focus on working each muscle to the max.

Besides that, I think seeing other shirtless guys can also help you push harder. Seeing other guys working out shirtless and pushing themselves to build their bodies motivates me to push myself harder, to keep up with them. Even though we may not be lifting the same thing, I feel like I have to push myself at least as hard as the guys around me. Actually seeing the other guy's muscles flexing intensifies the effect. So, I recommend not just working out shirtless, but finding some other guys to workout shirtless together.

Some people will probably object that working out shirtless is not sanitary. That is nonsense. Your hands are much more likely to spread disease because you touch everything with them, including your own eyes and nose (mucous membranes are a common way disease organisms are spread). Yet, we would never think of requiring gloves to be worn! Instead, we suggest washing your hands frequently. Besides, with tank tops and shorts there is already plenty of skin contact with equipment, what makes the little extra that would have been covered by a tank top or cut up gym shirt less sanitary than the part which is already touching the gym equipment? The proper solution is to wipe down equipment between users, preferably with disinfectant. And I hope you shower after working out anyway!

If your gym doesn't allow guys to workout shirtless, ask them about why. Maybe they will reconsider. One possible solution where offending the opposite sex is a concern is to have designated male-only hours where shirts are optional. Many gyms already have a female-only time, in which case it is only fair. That said, I don't see any reason to require shirts when women are present. Women don't find shirtless men offensive at the beach or pool, and many do not find it offensive for men to lift shirtless in the gym, either. If your gym won't make shirtless accommodations, look into finding a gym that does. And if you actually run a gym, consider letting guys workout shirtless. It may even be a selling point to get members who prefer to workout shirtless. And remember, shirtless-friendly and family-friendly are not mutually exclusive.

  2. I'm a girl, so obviously I can't workout totally shirtless, but I do enjoy wearing just a sports bra for similar reasons. And I think having an entire blog dedicated to spreading shirtlessness is just awesome.

  4. When it comes to working out I love bare chested hunks - I belong to a gym where that is allowed I often will ask if I can join in sometimes just to workout with the muscled hunks. I often will have guys come to me ask if I'd like to join them in the locker room had one guy offer to let me listen to his heart so I laid my head against his gorgeously smooth chest.

  6. Man, you are so right. Put simply, working out barechested makes me feel like a real animal and intensifies my dedication to sweat and hardcorp muscle burn. And you can watch the pump grow in the mirrors. I finally joined a private gym where I could work out stripped to the waist like a man and got some great partners who feel the same way I do and fuel each other's workouts.

  7. My alternate option is a string tank top. It is the closest I can get to being shirtless. Can someone please tell me that there is such a gym in NYC.

  8. If you don't want sweat on the benches, another way not mentioned here is placing a towel on the bench before you lie on it. I'd like to join a shirtless-friendly gym but there's no such thing around here. I've worked out shirtless once in a small local community centre gym but that was during the early hours where nobody else was around and I really liked to see the muscles work and get pumped in the mirror and the sweat dripping with the intensity.

  9. I really enjoy working out shirtless. I have a mature yet lean and muscular physique and really get a fantastic workout just wearing shorts. Some guys don't care for this, but you are not there to please them, just yourself. It also helps if, between sets, you karate kick or punch a bag - then these complainers kep their opinions to themselves!

  31. @Ambrosia Noire, you're repeating yourself. I haven't a good reason you shouldn't work out shirtless. But, expect to work it out with the guys themselves if you do. It will be awkward and there will be a lot of feelings to air and deal with before a comradely atmosphere re-gels. It's not impossible, but it won't be easy. And that isn't sexist, it's simply human, since most human beings fear change, and will resist change.

  32. I get it about younger guys inspiring other guys, younger and older, but how about much older guys, 60 and older. Most don't have the same smooth lean appeal young guys, and women, have. They, too, however, will want to work out shirtless, and if you think them unattractive or aesthetically wanting, you will need to adjust your thinking, and your point of view. Shirtless for some must be shirtless for all. It's a new world we're talking about. Not traditional American, some will feel, and say. They will need to go elsewhere for traditional American, whatever that is.

  38. This site offers a shirtless friendly directory, but it's not working; when I click it, it says the page doesn't exist. The page that comes up only has a few states with shirtless friendly gyms. Will this be fixed? Or, is this all that actually does exist currently, and there is no issue? If someone who runs the site could respond, I'd appreciate it!
